I love boatyards. The tangle of metal, derelict vessels, and rusted tools, encompassed by tall weeds, ultimately gives way to the highest order of a boat awaiting launch, ship shape. The people who work here are invariably interesting. They are real engineers, highly skilled, having to fix the broad range of problems that can beset a boat. Present day problems include electronics, but also, as for years, include all manner of mean-spirited devices such as outboard motors. To top it off, boatyard operators usually contain a wisdom and wit, forged by years of dealing with boat owners. They have my respect for this. I hope to be a boatyard operator in a future life. |
